Yes
Visas are “usually” available at the airport. However, it is recommended to get your visa before departing to go to Bolivia because it is possible to be refused entry into the country if you do not have a visa upon arrival. You can apply for a visa at the Bolivian consulate.

The Bolivia currency is the boliviano.

United States currency is often accepted. However, using boliviano’s is recommended when possible because the exchange rate for US currency fluctuates and oftentimes the best rate is not offered. If you do use American dollars, they usually have to be in pristine condition, with no blemishes or even the smallest of tears.
There are currency exchanges throughout many of the major cities and at the airport. Major banks can also do conversions, however they will often refuse to do so unless you have a bank account with them and if they will do it it will usually involve a fee. Using ATMs is often the easiest and safest way to get local currency. The ATM’s bank will charge a fee and you should check with your bank to determine what fees they may charge. Some United States banks can charge exorbitant fees for using an international ATM and some charge a conversion fee. It is highly recommended that you discuss your specific travel plans with your bank and plan accordingly. We also recommend having at least two different ATM cards from different banks (if possible) in case one is lost, damaged, or unusable.

There will often be a minimum purchase required to use a credit card and are rarely accepted for small purchases. Many places will charge a percentage fee for using credit cards. In general, credit cards can be used in larger stores in the larger cities. Fees and conversion rates vary greatly between banks, so, it is highly recommended that you research the fees associated with using your credit card internationally with the specific bank provider before traveling. Although American Express and Discover are often unknown by local vendors, they are often accepted where credit cards are accepted.

Travelers checks have fallen out of favor and are often impossible or complicated to use.
Many of the meals are included in the tour price. A lunch in Bolivia can range from a few dollars to $20 or more depending on where you choose to eat. Many places will only have small restaurants where the $3 range is common. However, in the larger cities especially in the tourist areas, the prices can be significantly more expensive. Dinner prices are typically slightly more expensive than lunch, however alcoholic drinks can significantly increase the price.
Rainy season in Bolivia can make some places inaccessible. GBT does not coordinate Joinable tours during the rainy season for the Bolivian Amazon jungle because strict schedules are hard to maintain due to fluctuating availability of flights and other means of transportation. However, you can arrange a Private tour in the rainy season and there are many rewards for traveling then – such as fewer tourists, and the ability to see more wildlife due to increased access by boats. In the salt flats rainy season allows for the incredible mirrored effect that creates dream-like scenes. We strive to provide as much access to as many areas as can be safely reached and adjust the itinerary to include

Spanish as well as Quechua are widely spoken in Bolivia. There are over 35 languages recognized as national languages in the country.
The Tour Hosts for joinable tours speak English, Spanish, and often additional languages. The local guides often speak English, however in some areas, the Tour Host will translate the local guides commentary. For Private tours, other tour language options are available.
Street food in Bolivia is plentiful and often delicious! It is always a good idea to look at the options available and try to determine where the locals are going because that is usually a good indicator of food quality and value. Uncooked foods such as fruits and vegetables should be washed using vinegar before eating.
No. Any water to be consumed should be purchased. Some people will use the tap water for things like brushing their teeth and have no problems, however, it is recommended to use bottled water even for brushing your teeth.
The documentation required is subject to change and it is the guest’s responsibility to understand the requirements and comply with them. We recommend checking the US State Department’s website for up to date Visa documentation requirements.

Traveling with the group could be one or more drivers, a Tour Host and one or more local guides. Public/Joinable tours have a maximum of 10 guests and probably average 8 guests. Private tours including Custom tours can be any size group.

Tours are made available in other languages by utilizing a multilingual Tour Host. tours are available in Japanese, German, Italian, French, and other languages based on availability.

Public/Joinable tours are the only tours with minimum age requirements – all guests must be at least 21 years old at the start of the tour or 15 or over at the start of the tour traveling with a parent or guardian. There are no GBT regulations regarding minimum ages for Private tours including Custom tours.

Public/Joinable tours are the only tours with minimum age requirements – all guests must be at least 21 years old at the start of the tour or 15 or over at the start of the tour traveling with a parent or guardian. There are no GBT regulations regarding minimum ages for Private tours including Custom tours.
For any prospective guest over the age of 70 at the tour start date must have verification by a doctor that they are physically fit for the tour requirements. For all Private tours including custom tours, there are no age restrictions.

The countries in which GBT travels do not enjoy the same regulations that require amenities to support wheelchairs and other assisted mobility devices. The vehicles used for Public/Joinable tours are not set up to accommodate mobility restrictions, so we are only able to accommodate mobility restricted guests on Private tours including Custom tours.

Private tours can an utilize itinerary based on Joinable tours or customized the itinerary for specific interests within destination countries. those traveling in the private groups will be regulated by whomever is responsible for the tour.
Tour prices are based on there being two people in each room. Therefore anyone traveling solo will need to pay a fee, a Single Supplement, for having a private room. There is no additional cost for any other component of the tour and this is in no way a penalty. You can think of it this way, if you and your partner were to get a $100 a night hotel room, it would cost each of you $50. If only you stayed in the same room, you would pay $100. That is exactly what we do when determining a Single Supplement rate, we are simply adding the full cost of the room into the tour price.
There are no age restrictions for Private tours including Custom tours. For Joinable tours, all guests must be 21 years old or older by the start of the tour or 15 or older by the start of the tour and accompanied by a parent or guardian (guardian must be 21 or over). A parent or guardian can accompany two guests under the age of 21.
Prospective guests can look at the Is This Tour Right for Me sections of any tour to get a better understanding of what the tour entails to make a personal assessment regarding its appropriateness based on the guest’s requirements.
All guests should consult with their physician prior to booking the tour to better ensure that a tour itinerary is appropriate.
Most itinerary excursions that include traveling by boat can be skipped by guests (the Bolivia Grand and Jungle & Mountains Tours have major boat-based components and are therefore unsuitable for guests wanting to avoid traveling by boat). There are alternative excursions set up in case weather or water conditions prevent the water-based excursion. So, if a guest wanted to skip the components involving boats, they can simply enjoy free time to explore on their own or if sufficient notices given, an alternative itinerary could be set up for them at an additional cost. The enjoyment and comfort of all guests must be considered and if a guest is constantly sick while in vehicles, it can cause other guests to be uncomfortable, and the guest might be asked to leave the tour. It is therefore recommended that someone prone to car sickness look into a Private tour instead of a Public/Joinable tour so that the itinerary can be adjusted to accommodate the guest that is prone to car sickness if required.
On tours all breakfasts, some lunches and some dinners are provided. If we know in advance about specific dietary restrictions we can often accommodate them for the meals that we provide. However, strict restrictions requiring absolute separation of ingredients from the source can usually not be accommodated on Joinable tours. However, they can most often be accommodated on Private tours where locations can be specifically selected for the requested diets. In larger cities, there are restaurants and supermarkets that can usually provide food suitable for most diets. accessing those markets including transportation to and from them are the sole responsibility of the guest. Some of the locations that GBT goes to are remote and, therefore, have limited food options. In those instances, guests can prepare by shopping in the larger cities that are visited and we will provide a cooler for the transportation of a modest amount of guest food.
For Public/Joinable tours you should expect to get your luggage from the transportation to your hotel room yourself. Many of the hotels will not have elevators. For Private tours including Custom tours luggage service can be included.
Yes, on Private tours including Custom tours. However, on Joinable tours they are not allowed.

We do our best to maintain the scheduled itinerary, however sometimes modifications are required. We have extensive knowledge of the destinations and a large network of partners and affiliates, so we can implement the necessary changes and maintain incredible experiences for our guests. Some locations are more prone to detours and you can see our assessment of the likelihood of detours for a given tour in the Is this Tour a Good Fit sections.
In many circumstances, a particular activity in an itinerary can be skipped by a guest. Sometimes activities are linked to other activities and therefore skipping one would require skipping any of those which are linked to it. Similarly, some activities are enroute from one destination to another, so skipping it would likely mean simply waiting with the vehicle until the others have completed it.
There are few if any scheduled events on the first day of an itinerary. That day is considered an arrival day. The following day is usually in the same city as the arrival day. So, it is usually fairly easy to catch up with a tour group if the delay is less than one day. For delays longer than that it becomes more difficult to get a guest caught up with the group and any costs associated with doing so will need to be paid by the guest immediately. There will be no refunds for any part of a tour itinerary missed by a guest, however, it is likely something that would be covered by a good travel insurance policy.
Although it is not recommended, it can usually be accommodated. Any missed portion of an itinerary are not refundable. If GBT’s assistance is requested in facilitating a late arrival or early departure, any additional expenses would need to be paid before the services are rendered.
The information provided is used by GBT and third-party suppliers to book various tour components throughout the tour itinerary, for example, room reservations. Some components such as intertour ticketed transportation can sometimes require cancellation and a complete rebooking for changes. Changes are subject to a Change Fee for any and all changes due to the time and effort required to make such changes. Any additional costs associated with making the changes, including possible cancellation and rebooking of tour components will need to be paid immediately by the guest. All guests are encouraged to take their time when filling out the guest information and to thoroughly check the information that they submit. When GBT sends a summary of the information that has been provided guests should review it and notify GBT of any errors immediately.

GBT does not require any vaccinations in order to travel with us. However, in order to travel with us you have to be allowed into the destination country and, therefore, must meet their vaccination requirements.
There is nothing that GBT can do if you are unable to enter a country due to non-compliance with their entry regulations. Some countries have vaccination requirements and some vaccinations require booster shots to be considered fully effective. Most vaccinations required by other countries are the same vaccinations that the majority of United States citizens commonly have. It is up to the guest to ensure that they get any vaccinations required to enter a destination country. If a guest is unable to take part in a tour that they have booked, their cancellation will be subject to the Cancellation Policy.
Yes, travel insurance is required for the entire duration of the tour. The coverage will be verified at the start of the tour by GBT by contacting the insurance company.
Travel insurance with the following minimum coverages are required for the entire duration of the tour:
As soon as possible after making a payment for the tour and any other purchases such as the flights to and from the tour start that they would like to have covered by the insurance.
All guests must have the minimum required insurance coverages effective for the entire duration of the tour. Coverages will be verified directly with the insurance company and no one will be allowed on the tour without the specified minimum insurance.
GBT will verify insurance on the first day of the tour usually by contacting the insurance company directly. Documents (electronic or physical) showing coverage is not sufficient proof of coverage.
The guest will not be allowed to participate in the tour if they do not have travel insurance with the minimum coverages for the entire duration of the tour. If GBT is unable to verify the travel insurance, it will be considered a cancellation by the guest and subject to the Cancellation Policy.
The guest will not be allowed to participate in the tour if they do not have travel insurance with the minimum coverages for the entire duration of the tour. If GBT is unable to verify the travel insurance, it will be considered a cancellation by the guest and subject to the Cancellation Policy.
Since GBT has itineraries in some remote areas, the availability of rooms can sometimes be limited. We do our best to provide accommodations based on the requests of the guests. For instance, some guests that are sharing a room prefer to have separate beds whereas others prefer to have one bed. Similarly, guests might request to have first floor accommodations. The vast majority of the time maintaining those configurations or location requests is no problem. However, sometimes due to increased demand or other factors including construction, the requested configurations or room locations might not be available for all of the nights.
No. GBT requires that all guests specify their roommates. If a guest is traveling by themselves, they will need to pay a single supplement for their own rooms when available.
Single rooms are not available in all locations on some tours.
No. Single rooms are available if a single supplement fee is paid. The fee is based on single occupancy rooms for all available nights on a tour.

Citizens from countries listed on Group 2 may obtain a visa for Bolivia valid for 30 days from their nearest Bolivian consulate – some of which offer online applications. Under some circumstances you can request a tourist Visa at the airport or at the Bolivian border, however it’s recommended that travelers not rely on this option. Depending on which country you are from, there can be a fee, usually around $55 US (see below for US citizen prices).
Once in the country, the visa is extendable by request for a further 60 days; continuous or discontinuous in the period of 1 year. You can renew your visa by visiting an immigration office in Bolivia (not including immigration offices at border crossings). A 30 day extension costs around $30 US.
  • A visa application form completed and signed
  • Passport with six months of validity until expiration
  • A printed copy of yellow fever vaccination (front and back)
  • Proof of onward travel – if you don’t have a round trip or onward ticket out of Bolivia (for example if you’re traveling by bus), you may wish to purchase a flight or bus ticket out of the country in advance to use as proof
  • Evidence of funds or printed copy of bank statement (3 months worth)
  • A printed hotel reservation or written invitation in Spanish from friends or relatives in Bolivia
  • A 4cm X 4cm or passport sized photo
Though in practice you are unlikely to be asked for all of these documents if applying for your visa at the border (most likely you will only need to show your passport, yellow fever certificate and pay the fee), it is a requirement of the Bolivian government, so you may wish to have this information handy just in case.
For US citizens, a tourist visa can be obtained for $160 US in cash using the same procedures as Group 2. This visa fee is called a ‘reciprocity fee’ as it is the same amount that citizens of Bolivia are charged to visit the United States. Note that paying the visa fee when entering Bolivia exempts you from paying any exit fees. If paying the fee at the Bolivian border/airport make sure you have freshly minted US dollars as no marked bills nor credit cards will be accepted.
US tourist visas are valid for 10 years from the date of issue with a stay of 30 days for the purpose of tourism that does not include conducting any sort of paid or for-profit activity. US tourists may extend their 30 day stay up to a 90 day stay through the Bolivian immigration offices. The maximum period of stay for tourists is 90 days per calendar year. The additional periods can be consecutive or non-consecutive within a 1 year period. A US tourist visa holder will only be able to use the visa for up to 3 trips per year.
As visa and other entry and exit conditions can change at short notice, you should contact your country’s nearest Embassy or Bolivia consulate for the most up to date information before making your trip to Bolivia.
Please Note: According to the US Embassy, as of May 2015, US citizens visiting Bolivia as tourists should obtain an entry visa prior to travel. While a number of US passengers in the past have been successful in purchasing a visa upon arrival at La Paz and Santa Cruz airports as well as Bolivian land borders, recently there have been a number of cases where tourists have been refused entry for not having a visa on arrival. Unfortunately, there is no clear reason as to why some are let in and others refused, it’s just something to be aware of so you can make an informed decision. Better to be safe than sorry, we recommend organising your visa prior to traveling to Bolivia.
If you lose your passport after receiving the Visa you will need to purchase another visa to be allowed to exit Bolivia (only for visas received on entry not for those received at the consulate).
We recommend not cutting it close in regards to the expiration date of your passport.
It is recommended to have two blank pages available in the passport to accommodate the entry and exit visas.
